Five things, all of them specified for the coast they stand on. Whether it is a blocked parapet gutter on a Brighton terrace or a Horsham stone slab roof in the Weald, the survey and the written quote are free.

01 — New Roofs

New Roofs

A new roof is the single biggest thing you will do to a house that nobody will ever compliment you on. It should be the last time you think about it for forty years — and near the sea, whether it is depends almost entirely on decisions made in the first week.

What is included

  • Full strip, inspection and replacement of defective timbers
  • Breathable underlay and new treated battens throughout
  • Natural slate, clay or concrete tile to suit the property
  • Copper or aluminium fixings — never galvanised near the sea
  • Dry-fixed ridge, hip and verge on exposed elevations

02 — Roof Repairs

Roof Repairs

Most roof repairs go wrong in the diagnosis, not the work. Water enters at one point, runs along a batten or a rafter and appears somewhere else entirely — and on a terrace with a hidden valley gutter it can enter three doors away.

What is included

  • Full diagnosis before any work is quoted
  • Slipped, cracked and missing slates and tiles replaced
  • Ridge and verge re-bedding, or dry-fix conversion
  • Lead flashings renewed — dressed and wedged, not mastic
  • Parapet and valley gutter clearing, repair and relining

03 — Flat Roofing

Flat Roofing

Flat roofs have a bad reputation earned entirely by cheap ones. A properly specified flat roof is one of the most reliable things on a building. The trouble is that the difference is invisible on the day it is finished and obvious eight years later.

What is included

  • EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and high-performance felt systems
  • Existing decks inspected and replaced where they have gone soft
  • Tapered insulation to build in a proper fall where there is none
  • Fully bonded membranes with mechanically fixed edge trims
  • Upstands, kerbs and abutments detailed for coastal wind uplift

04 — Fascias, Soffits & Guttering

Fascias, Soffits & Guttering

The roofline is the strip of board and gutter running along the eaves, and it does more work than anything else on the house. It is also the part everyone leaves until it is visibly rotten — by which point it has usually taken something else with it.

What is included

  • Full roofline replacement — fascia, soffit and bargeboard
  • uPVC systems in a range of finishes, including woodgrain
  • Rotten rafter ends cut back and repaired before boarding
  • Continuous or over-fascia eaves ventilation fitted as standard
  • New guttering, hung to a correct fall and correctly sized

05 — Roof Maintenance

Roof Maintenance

Almost every expensive roof job we are called to started as a cheap one that nobody looked at. A cracked ridge bed, a lifted flashing, a valley silted up with moss — none of it is urgent, all of it is invisible from the pavement, and any of it will eventually let water into the timbers.

What is included

  • Full visual inspection with photographs of anything found
  • Ridge, hip and verge condition checked and reported
  • Flashings, chimneys and abutments inspected
  • Moss removed by hand and brush, never by pressure washer
  • Valleys, gutters and outlets cleared and tested
